Horses  and mules for sale and rehome

In our hunt for the perfect guest horses, we encounter (and purchase) horses and mules who end up not making the cut as a guest horse for various reasons. Some of them need one person to work with them instead of a different person every day. Some need more training that we don’t have time for. Wide Sky does not support horse auctions/ sending horses to kill pens, which means we accumulate animals who need a different job or owner and we are seeking to ethically find them appropriate homes and jobs. In most cases we can negotiate with someone who is the right fit for the animal. In some cases we have animals that need to retire or are ineligible for work and need a retirement home where they will be loved and cared for. We are committed to transparency with these critters so that they can find the best home possible for them, as they have become part of our family.

Come meet these guys and see what you think!

JOHNNY

13 year old 14h red john mule - $3,000

Johnny is a good citizen. He aims to please for both riding and packing and is a slower following type mule for riding. If you know how to ride he’s a pleasant ride. He is afraid of noises from the ground and on his backs (phone noises, Velcro, zippers etc.), so not good for our guest program. I’ve used him to pack gear out to our ranch camp with guests and for packing clinics and he does great. He follows/ ponies nicely. He’s very personable, loves attention, will back into you for butt rubs, but also can be skeptical of people in a few situations like he might have history with being mistreated. Not the best with the farrier, but they always get it done. I’ve always just had him barefoot -he’s got hard black hooves.

16 year old 13.3 hand red dun john mule packs & rides (Cody) $3,800

Cody is probably 13.3 hands and stout, well built. He outwalks big horses. I got him as a 12 year old in 2021, so he’s 16 now. Lots of miles left since he hasn’t been used hard. He can be fun to ride and pretty soft in the face, and will work off your leg. I’ve moved cows with him, ridden him in parades and done a little arena stuff. After time off he  needs time to gradually ramp up to riding so he stays relaxed, but does just great with consistency and one person to call his own. He loves to walk out and is pretty relaxed leading on the trail (he will outwalk 16H horses). At times he can get defensive, so not a beginner mule. Eg I was checking my phone on the way back from a good cow move and dropped it and caught it by slapping it against my thigh and he thought I was getting after him and humped up for a minute. I stayed on, all good for an intermediate rider.

As a pack animal he has always been just great, during packing clinics with beginners. In wilderness he does great too. He’s got 4  black feet and I barely need to do much with them. For wilderness trips with rocks he does need shoes or he’ll start to get sore after a few days. He can be a little sly to catch, but it hasn’t been much more than an annoyance every now and again. If you go out to the corral with  no halter he will be all about hanging out with you and getting love. I love riding him but don’t have time to be consistent like he needs.

ROOSTER

8 year old gray titled mustang gelding (15.3h )  $7,500

Rooster is an 8-year-old hunky, eye-catching titled mustang. Four big black  hooves,  smooth gaits, feels strong and athletic under you. He has packed with previous owner, done trail rides with us, been exposed to cattle, hobbles, started at walk/ trot / lope in an arena or outside. Still working on a balanced lope.

Needs continued training by an intermediate / experienced rider to finish him out. Very smart and lots of potential with the right person who can be consistent challenging him mentally and physically. Could be a good cowboys horse, or english prospect. Very Personable with people, and in your pocket!

Has a scar on his lip from when he was rounded up as a yearling. It makes carrying  a bit less appealing/ effective than a bosal or hackamore.

CISCO

15 year old Haflinger cross (14.3 hands), Stout. $4,500, negotiable.

The good: he seems happy to follow along on a trail ride with whomever on his back. Loves to walk out, either in front or behind.

The difficult: he’s got a bit of a pony attitude and likes to roll in creeks. He responds somewhat better about not trying it as we have gotten after him but also seems like a well-ingrained habit. As teenagers are, he’s a little stiff on his front end, might need a little equiox for longer days. He doesn’t seem interested in rolling in shallow creeks, but will try to dunk ya in deep water. If you don’t mess with his program, he won’t mess with you and will be happy as a clam (especially if you let him swim ;-).

FRITZ

13 year old 15.1 hand bay quarter  horse  gelding. $4,500, negotiable.

He's not fancy broke but will lead or follow down the trail. He has a very nice quarter horse hip, and a cute roman nose Very happy go lucky, sweet attitude and  wants to please but at times lacks trust with his rider when not ridden regularly. Supposedly  has roped a couple times with the scammy horse trader I bought him from. He’s got some maintenance that can be corrected with shoeing and/or equiox. He’s got a cloudy left eye with partial vision loss (according to the vet). Would be a very sweet and personable backyard pony… this guy is thick and an easy keeper. He’s a point and shoot kinda guy going out on the trail or ranch. Nothing fancy but he tries hard to please.
